Simply stated, paper is coated to improve print quality and reduce costs. Kaolin products are more affordable than fiber and other paper ingredients; hence lower costs. But functionally, paper is coated to improve smoothness, porosity, opacity, brightness, whiteness, ink receptivity and many other properties. BASF produces a number of products to enhance brightness and whiteness so the color of ink is maintained when applied to paper. Our additives are used to improve a number of characteristics, such as opacity, brightness, ink receptivity and printability, as well as to enhance paper processing efficiency.

Premium brightness calcined kaolin

Ansilex® 93 calcined kaolin has high brightness with fine particle size. The unique coating morphology (bulk and porosity) generated by Ansilex® 93 enhances aesthetics and printability. It is ideal for improving opacity, brightness, smoothness, ink receptivity, blister resistance, glueability, binder migration and printability. As a paper filler, Ansilex® 93 imparts cost-effective opacity and brightness in wood free and mechanical pulp furnishes.

Ultra high brightness calcined kaolin

Luminex® calcined kaolin has ultra-high brightness with fine particle size. Luminex® imparts the highest degree of sheet brightness and whiteness in a wide range of pulps and is particularly effective in unbleached, medium bleached or recycled-fiber pulps. In a coating formulation, the unique morphology (bulk and porosity) generated by Luminex®enhances aesthetics and printability. Luminex® delivers exceptional paper and paperboard brightness and shade, opacity, smoothness, ink receptivity and resistance to print show-through. Its high brightness and outstanding shade properties in combination with high opacifying capabilities make it a cost effective partial replacement for titanium dioxide.
